Macro-nutrients
Macro-nutrients are the 3 main nutrients that your body needs. Carbohydrates, fats and protein. If you want to lose, maintain or gain weight then tracking your macro-nutrients is a great way to ensure the process. Your macronutrients will then layout the amount of calories you eat each day.
1 gram of carbohydrates is equal to 4 calories.
1 gram of protein is equal to 4 calories as well.
1 gram of fat is equal to 9 calories.
So, for every gram of protein or carbs you eat, you will intake 4 calories, and for every gram of fat you intake, you will consume 9 calories.
There are many different ratios that people choose to intake their macros through to hit their daily caloric intake needs. Some people do better with high fats, low carb, or vice-versa. The best way to find out is trial and error. Obviously, if you are looking to build muscle you want to be sure you are consuming the proper amount of protein.
